One of the easiest things I think you can do to help the environment is bringing your own bags instead of accepting the standard plastic. Even though paper bags are usually available and readily recyclable, it still takes resources to create and then recycle the bags. So, I’ve adopted the habit of using Baggu Bags and Flip and Tumble Produce Bags. I keep them in my car and after a bit getting used to, I always bring them into the store. If I forget, I turnaround and retrieve them – it’s that important to me.
I’ve had the Baggus for years and have yet to replace any. The produce bags are a newer purchase and I absolutely love them. Stephen has a thing about putting produce directly in the cart so would always pull a small plastic bag. I just think it’s nice to not have apples rolling every which way!
So, if you’re looking for that first step toward a more eco-friendly lifestyle, I definitely recommend reusable bags. P.S. Did you hear Denver will likely be the next city to start charging for plastic bags to help curb the use?
It’s been awhile since I shared my favorite all-natural and eco-friendly personal care products so I figured it was time to do so. I have several friends who buy products with the same mantra and we regularly share product recommendations. Here’s my latest picks.
1- Acure Radical Resurfacing Lotion - A recent discovery, I feel like this has really improved the tone and texture of my skin. I use this at night after cleansing and toning.
2- Acure Super Fruit + Chlorella Facial Cleanser - After washing with this, my oily skin is left feeling clean but not parched. I use it morning and night. A little goes a long way and I love that it removes eye make-up.
3- Acure Oil Control Facial Moisturizer - I was a moisturizer avoider for a long time because I already had oily skin and didn’t think I needed to add more. But, when both a facialist and a dermatologist suggested that my skin might be oilier than it needed to be because it was parched, I gave this moisturizer a test run. I use it after cleansing and toning but below my sunscreen and BB Cream. Love it!
4- Witch Hazel – Recommended by a facialist, I put some on a cotton ball and use morning and night after cleansing. I think it does a great job of clarifying and controlling oil. Best part? A bottle of it is about $1!
5- Whole Foods Triple Milled Soap - I’ve been using this soap for about a year and absolutely love it. Be forewarned, the ingredients list fragrance which is a big no-no for me, but I confirmed that fragrance is simply essential oils.
6- Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm - My go to for daily use; I wear this and it provides a pretty ‘just bit’ stain to my lips. My favorite color is Rose.
7- Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush - This came at the recommendation of a Sephora sales associate and I couldn’t be happier. A little goes a long way and don’t be scared off at how bright the colors look in the packaging, they’re beautiful on and provide that perfect flushed look. My favorite color is Amused.
8- Burt’s Bees Lip Shine - When I’m looking to be a little be more glam than the tinted lip balm, I reach for the lip shine. It’s sheer with just a hint of color. My go to color is Flutter.
9- Nature’s Gate Unscented Lotion - A long time favorite, this replaced my Lubriderm years ago and I haven’t looked back.
10- Acure Lemongrass + Argan Stem Cell Clarifying Shampoo - Another Acure recent discovery, I use this about once a week (maybe twice in the summer) when I feel like my hair is getting heavy or greasy.
11- Acure Triple Moisture Repairing Shampoo - My go-to daily shampoo, this leaves my hair feeling soft and shiny.
12- Acure Triple Moisture Repairing Conditioner - Paired with the my go-to shampoo, I love how my hair feels after using. Typically, I’ll leave this on for about two-minutes to really nourish my hair.
13- Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes Mascara - A recent find, I’m loving how this lengthens and thickens my lashes. It’s taken me a long time to find a mascara that didn’t flake and run. Truthfully, since I was just putting this on my lashes, a dead fiber, it wasn’t at the top of my list. But, since my goal is to use as many natural products as possible, I’ve stayed on the hunt and I’m so glad to discover this one.
14- Tom’s of Maine Toothpaste - It took me about a week to get used to the less sweet taste of all natural toothpaste but once I discovered what all those ingredients really were in conventional paste, I knew I had to switch. Tom’s is the most widely available and I just get the least expensive variety that says it’s antiplaque. I’ve found that Target seems to have the best price.
15- Do Terra Melaleuca Oil – Anytime I have a blemish I apply this oil and it dries it right up. The smell is pretty powerful but this stuff works so I stick with it!
16- Kiss My Face SPF 30 Body Sunscreen - I used this during our most recent beach trip and loved it! It’s non-greasy, rubbed in quickly, smelled great and really worked. The best all-natural body sunscreen I’ve used.
Alas you think I’m perfect, there are still a few products I’ve yet to find an all-natural, eco-friendly alternative. I’m still on the hunt for a facial sunscreen, BB Cream and deodorant. For the sunscreen and BB Cream, they all seem to leave my skin feeling greasy. And for the deodorant, I just can’t find on that works. Do you have any suggestions? This Saturday is Earth Hour from 8:30-9:30PM. Are you familiar?
In an effort to gain global exposure to a growing climate change problem, last year 5,200 cities and towns in 135 countries worldwide participated by switched off their lights.
This year, some of the amazing landmarks around the world are going dark include the Empire State Building, Great Wall of China, Eiffel Tower, Sydney Opera House and amazingly, the International Space Station.
What about you, are you participating? I think it’s fantastic and really is a great way to not only bring attention to this problem, but unplug from our connected world. How about a little stargazing or reading by candle light? Sounds great to me.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been trying to phase out all my personal care products that have synthetic fragrance, preservatives and scary chemicals. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had skin problems associated with fragranced and “extra care” body lotions. And, the more I got thinking (and researching), I began to realize that some of my facial ailments might actually be caused by the products I was using to treat them.
So, after reading about Boscia on Kate’s blog where she described herself as having very similar skin to me (oily, blackhead prone, occasional breakouts), I decided to go talk to the skincare experts at Sephora where each and every one of them raved about the products.
They’re made without parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, petrochemicals, GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) and Triclosan- all ingredients found in both professional and over-the-counter make-up and personal care products. If you’re unfamiliar about what these things do to your body, I highly recommend you educate yourself. The majority of the chemicals in these products are outlawed in the EU and it’s an insult that we are still allowed to use these products. Educate yourself, please.
I picked up a Clear Complexion Starter Kit, really loved three of the treatments and went from there building on additional products. They have literally transformed my skin and I highly, highly recommend. Here’s my favorites:
1- Clear Complexion Cleanser - My absolute favorite cleanser; I will never use another again. My oily skin never feels tight but the shine and slickness is gone. I use morning and night.
2- BB Cream – If you don’t like heavy foundation but want to even out your skin tone, this beauty balm is it! A broad spectrum SPF 27, moisturizer, primer, skin tint, concealer and pore minimizer, this replaces so many products. Perfect for all skin types, I put this on after my No Pores No Shine T-Zone Treatment and am set for the day!
3- Clear Complexion Treatment - Because I have a tendency toward breakouts, I use this at night to help control oil, get rid of breakouts and maintain clear, glowy skin.
4- No Pores No Shine T-Zone Treatment – A new favorite; this goes on in the morning after cleansing. I’m always shiny about 2-hours after applying my BB Cream and don’t look or feel fresh. This changes that. Seriously, it controls my oil and shine all day.
Not pictured: Clear Complexion Tonic – This is a standard astringent that provides a deeper clean. I tend to use more in the summer after cleansing, both morning and night.
Several of my friends use the products for normal, dry and aging skin with the same raving reviews. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!
